Fads or Trends: Hash Jeans, Perms, Flintstones at noon Additional Comments:It really was a great place to grow up that wasn't appreciated till later in life.
Continued Education: Yes, but I worked my first year out of high school at a Woolco store in Saskatoon in the paint department. I then attended the University of Saskatchewan and received my Bachelor of Education degree (Phys. Ed. as my major, and Language Arts as my minor). I also obtained an Interior Design Certificate through correspondence.
Memories: I came to the Kelliher School partway through grade eleven from a larger school in Tisdale. It was a little difficult to fit in with the students here as the majority, if not all in my grade had been friends since Kindergarten. And everyone seemed to be related somehow!! There was no Phys. Ed. offered for our class which was disappointing, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Senior Girls' Volleyball team, badminton, and track and field conditioning started right after the Christmas holidays! Broomball was great fun, too! There were lots of staff changes in the 1978-1979 school year, with Mr. Renneberg, Miss Coutts, Mr. Nowosad, and Mr. Mitchell as the school's principal. Mumps, measles, and chicken pox took a lot of kids out of school for a while (usually around Christmas). Most of the boys in our grade were real pranksters, but I won't go there. Ha! Some of the graduations memories I remember is the Interdenominational church service that was held in our honour and Mrs. Lenore Rein (Skilnik) came in to practice with the girls on how to sit like ladies on stage while in our dresses. No crossed legs and knees together!!
Fads or Trends: FADS: Very large rimmed glasses with dark, tinted lenses.
CLOTHING: Bomber jackets, kangaroo jackets, jumpsuits, bell-bottomed hash pants and Adidas wear. HAIRSTYLES: Wow did we look good!! (so we thought!) Feathered "Farrah Fawcett" styles, "page boys", perms (gals and guys), natural hair colours and no products! Straight middle parts! The guys sported longer hair. MUSIC: The music was the best! Abba, Kiss, Harlequin, Streetheart, The Cars, Foreigner, Meatloaf
TV SHOWS: TV viewing for all ages! The Gong Show, Charlie's Angels, Kojak, Cannon, Columbo, Starsky and Hutch, Sanford and Son, W5
Additional Comments: My school years were fantastic! This is an absolutely fantastic idea and project! Thanks for all of your efforts in putting this together, and for the chance to go down Memory Lane! Have fun with it, and much success!!
Current Occupation: Resource Center Asst at a high school
Continued Education:
Memories: Beep and vico always getting stuck in that crazy machine!! Every once in a while the door to the staff room would open during recess and the smoke would be so thick you couldn’t see who was in there. Hitchhiking from Petras farm to town 'cause we couldn’t miss volleyball practice!
Current Occupation: Almost full-time "at-home" mom, fibre work
Continued Education: Through the Extension Division of the University of Regina . . . incomplete certificate in Administration. Currently studying theology . . . self-interest, only. I also have become somewhat of a "quilter" and teach classes in Regina for several venues ie. Community Associations, guilds, and stores. University of Regina Business Administration (incomplete)
Memories: Gosh . . . where do you start???? I STILL have dreams of not being prepared for an exam!!!! I don't remember the school work as much as I remember the social stuff . . . mostly the crazy guys in our class . . . humour was a HUGE part of everyday life in high school. Some things that stand out are:
1) Playing "Chug-a-lug" between exams at Ross's house and having to write English after lunch. Andy had to come and get Kathy!
2) Louis Kish snatching flies out of the air with his hands and storing them in his compass set.
3) Playing volleyball . . . and especially going to games in other towns and listening to BTO songs really loud on the way there.
4) Trading half a sandwich with Kathy EVERY DAY!!!! She always had better sandwiches than me . . . what a good and faithful friend!!!
5) Singing "Seasons in the Sun" one night just before graduating . . . with Ross, Lathy, Charlotte (I think??), Kenny, Myron, Mike, realizing that we will be going our separate ways in a few weeks and probably not seeing each other much or at all. Fads or Trends: Clothing: "Hash" jeans with the snaps instead of zippers . . . red or green plaid "lumber jackets". Hairstyles: 'fro perms, the old "curling iron flip" on the bangs . . . looked like a sausage. Movies: Benny and the Jets Songs: "You Beat Me to the Punch" by Charity Brown, anything by KISS, anything by BTO, "1814 we took a little trip . . ."
The smell of the Gestetner fluid in Mrs. Davies' room when she made copies. Hot lunches in glass sealers heated in a copper tub on a double hot plate. The boys lighting our paper on fire during typing tests and blaming the smoke smell on Mr. Pawelec’s garbage barrel. Record hops. The school newsletter with song dedications TO and FROM. The boys taking Home EC and not knowing the difference between a teaspoon/tablespoon, and no one wanting to eat the salty blueberry muffins. When the guys got caught throwing lunch garbage down the floor registered in the big classroom near the staff room and punishment was to go into the cistern below and shovel out all the garbage thrown down from years and years gone by. (Louis Kish? and ?). Out of town volleyball games and listening to BTO blasting on the radio during the rides home. Having storm homes when the buses couldn’t run. Our bus drivers always handing out a paper bag of goodies at Christmas. The ‘smoking pole’ where students were allowed to smoke outside. It was a power pole where we met. The staff room thick with smoke during 15 minute breaks. Valentine Day skating parties where we would list everyone’s name on the black board and alternate what they had to bring - sandwiches or dainties....Michael Moleski would always change the word to ‘panties’. Louis Kish having great skills of being able to catch flies with a quick swipe into the air - and deposit them into his compass case. Mrs. Naik getting her sari caught in the classroom door when the wind suctioned it closed. How students, especially couples, would walk up and down the hallways during breaks. Trading a half sandwich everyday at lunch with my friend Kathy Charanduk.
